  • Hello all!  Lots has happened since I last wrote!  I finished my thesis and graduated from CSULA with my MSW...I went on vacation with my family to Mammoth...I went on a 5 day cruise to San Diego, Catalina, and Ensenada...and now...

    I'm off to Brazil!

    map of brazil

I'll be spending the next five weeks (July 10 - August 12) on a missions trip to Brazil, along with Daniel Kim (who will be there for the first 5 days), and Jen Wu.  We'll be working with Hope Unlimited, an organization founded by one of the members of Gardena Valley Baptist Church (Philip Smith).  Hope Unlimited is a long-term residential facility for street children, and provide the kids with food, shelter, education, job training skills, and knowledge of the saving grace of Jesus Christ.  It really is an awesome organization (you can go to www.hopeunlimited.org for more information), so I'm reaaaallllly excited to go serve!

Praise the Lord, He has been faithful in providing for me and my teammates financially...but I'd like to ask you (whoever reads this!) for your prayers!  I'm a little anxious, because I've never been on a missions trip this far away, or for this long of a period of time...and this will be the first missions trip where I can't speak the language at all.  And also, this is the first year that Hope Unlimited is taking in outsiders to serve with them, so it'll really be a learning process for us all!  So, if you feel led and are willing, here are some things you can pray for:

    1. That we would have an extra amount of flexibility and God's grace throughout this trip

    2. That we would be able to adjust to the Brazilian culture

    3. That we would be able to transcend the language barrier by sharing God's love with the children and Hope Unlimited Staff

    4. That God would protect us from spiritual warfare, sickness, and anythng tha tmay be a hindrance to the work He has for us

    5. That God would be glorified in our attitudes, actions, and words

Thanks guys, and I'll see you when I get back! :)

  • Wow, I've really been MIA on this thing!  Haha I guess I've been more on Facebook and MySpace and haven't kept up so much with xanga.  But I do have some good news to share!  This past weekend, my church (Citylights) put on our very first Easter service/celebration as a church!  We had organized one last year, but we hadn't officialy launched the church yet.  So this year we went all out...we mailed out flyers all around the neighborhood inviting them to come celebrate with us, and we got an awesome response!  We expected a lot of people to come out for the celebration part (after church), but we didn't expect the turnout that we got for the actual church service!  In the children's ministry alone (which is where i was serving) we had somewhere around 70+ kids!  Haha our church is new, so we typically have about 15 kids total...so this was a pretty big stretch for us, and it was slightly chaotic...but praise God for all those kids He brought out!

One thing that was really amazing to me was how many of those kids had no idea why we celebrate Easter or even who Jesus is.  I asked the kids, "So, who knows why we celebrate Easter?"  And here are some of the responses I got:

    "Because of heaven?"

"Because the Easter bunny comes and gives us lots of candy!"

"To celebrate the baby bunnies and baby chickies that are born!"

Only the pastor's son was able to give me the right answer, which was really sad to me.  But it was exciting to be able to tell them about Jesus and how He died on the cross for our sins, and to see the kids' reactions to this good news!  I had a group of 25 kids, and even though they were talking and noisy and going nuts the whole time we were making crafts and eating snack, when I started to tell them the story of Jesus, they were all facing forward and listening closely.  It was an awesome sight.  Praise God for these little ones, and for the chance to share Jesus with them :)

*note* I have no pictures of Sunday School because it was waaaaay to chaotic!  Haha but it was awesome! :)

There were sooooooo many kids lined up to do the Easter egg hunt!  These are just the older kids (we had already let the younger ones in)

Good thing we separated the little kids from the older kids!  Those kids are egg crazy!

Praise God for allowing Citylights Church to be part of His work to bring Himself glory in Long Beach!

  • Look out world, I now own my first very own credit card!!!  Haha it may not be the prettiest credit card, but it has really good rewards, and it's all mine!  Chosen, applied for, and paid for by ME! :)  Just in time to go shopping on President's Day! ;) hehehe
